Key Stage 2

Active, dynamic, creative and challenging – this is where children discover their individual strengths and are helped to achieve academic excellence. For children aged 7-11, the curriculum is still focussed on the core skills of literacy and numeracy but children experience adventurous outdoor pursuits, quality art, sport, drama and music, together with a specialised ‘Life Skills’ programme to help every child to reach their full potential.
Welcome To Year 3
This is the first year of Key Stage 2. The children transfer smoothly from KS1 having previously visited their new class and spent time with their new teacher.
In Year 3, children are met with new challenges and are expected to work with greater independence, self discipline and concentration. The school day is longer. At the same time we ensure children have lots of fun across the curriculum, enjoying a variety of exciting topics through first hand experience. There are opportunities to play musical instruments such as the violin, and all children will begin to learn a modern foreign language.
Welcome To Year 4
During our exciting activities in Year 4, children learn to become more independent learners as they progress through Key Stage 2.
We continue to build on children’s life long skills through the core curriculum.
The children use their creative and co-operative skills in a range of rich topics, e.g. living in the day of a Viking or investigating local habitats! They reflect on their role in protecting the environment and being good citizens.
Welcome To Year 5
Year 5 is a very exciting and important year in school. The children have nearly reached the top end of the primary school. Increased maturity and dedication are needed to help the transition into Year 6.
In Year 5 the children cover a variety of topics such as “The Tudors,” “Rivers,” and different science topics such as “Earth, Sun and Moon.”
All Year 5 children are taken to a local swimming pool for swimming lessons. As the children progress they are awarded certificates to reward and encourage them further.
Welcome To Year 6
This is the final year at Horbury Primary School before the children leave to go to High School. Throughout the course of the year the children are encouraged to undertake responsibilities around the school. These responsibilities encourage the children to become more independent and responsible.
An important part of Year 6 is the end of Key Stage 2 SATs tests. Throughout the year children are organised into focussed groups aimed at levels 4 and 5 for Literacy and Numeracy. This guides them towards their tests in English, maths and science.
After the SATs, the children resume a more rounded curriculum where the Literacy is delivered through the History and Geography topics.
Children enjoy a residential trip to the Lake District where they are encouraged to become more independent, self aware and set themselves challenges. We spend an exciting time there, where the children are actively involved in a wide variety of outdoor and adventurous pursuits. These include rock climbing, abseiling, mountain biking, kayaking, canoeing, coastal traversing, raft building, sailing and orienteering.
