At Horbury Primary Academy we recognise that all pupils, regardless of their background, should have equal access to a curriculum which will enable them to reach their potential. The pupil premium is a Government initiative that targets extra money to pupils entitled to Free School meals, looked after children or the children of armed service personnel. Research shows that pupils falling into these groups often underachieve compared to their peers.
The Government has deployed a fixed amount of money to schools per pupil, based on the number of pupils eligible for:
- free school meals,
- looked after children or
- children of armed service personnel.
We also received Pupil Premium block funding for our early years children.

Pupil Premium Spending
We spend our money wisely, ensuring that our most vulnerable pupils enjoy and access the rich and broad curriculum we offer. Our governors and the head teacher work closely together to ensure that we use our funding to offer opportunities and experiences to support these children.
Pupil Premium is used in a number of ways: to finance interventions, to purchase resources, and to provide enrichment. The school spends money on quality interventions, delivered by highly skilled members of staff. These interventions take place both in and out of the classroom, and occur both during and at the end of the school day. Pupil premium money is also spent on the resources needed to deliver interventions to the highest quality. Enrichment activities, such as Young Enterprise day, music tuition, Forest Schools and subsidies for school trips and the Year 6 residential all aim to improve pupil enjoyment and have an impact on the quality of reading, writing and maths. Our Pupil Premium spending is monitored termly, to assess whether the interventions and resources are having an impact on the children. We monitor whether each intervention is making a difference and alter our spending to ensure positive outcomes.
Great academic success depends on great attendance. We want to make sure that all our children attend school every day and on time. We have extra adults on our doors to meet and greet our children with friendly smiles so that children make a positive start to their learning and really enjoy arriving at school. We offer support and signposting to families who may be struggling to meet our high attendance targets.
What do we do now?
In October 2018, we undertook a Pupil Premium Review which was completed by External Consultant Craig Batley.
- Write an action plan specifically focussed around improving attainment and progress for children in receipt of the pupil premium.
- Ensure all PP children are clearly identified and monitored on tracking data.
- Identify children not on track to achieve end of year expectations and put interventions in place.
- Train Local Governing Body to ensure they challenge leaders around the standards for pupil premium children.
- Meet regularly with Pupil Premium Governor to discuss progress of children and objectives from action plan.
- Ensure that children in receipt of the pupil premium are identified early and actively encourage parents, particularly in Early Years to complete FSM registration.
- Investigate and create opportunities to engage with parents pre-nursery (FEET activities).
- Return to the use of the 6Bs in classrooms to promote independency and increase the pace of learning.
- Deploy teaching assistants effectively in classrooms to ensure that they focus their impact positively on moving pupils learning forward.
- Ensure that marking is specific, consistent, addresses misconceptions, is done in a timely manner and allows children to respond to it.
