At Horbury Primary Academy we recognise that all pupils, regardless of their background, should have equal access to a curriculum which will enable them to reach their potential. The pupil premium is a Government initiative that targets extra money to pupils entitled to Free School meals, looked after children or the children of armed service personnel. Research shows that pupils falling into these groups often underachieve compared to their peers.
The Government has deployed a fixed amount of money to schools per pupil, based on the number of pupils eligible for:
- free school meals,
- looked after children or
- children of armed service personnel.
We also received Pupil Premium block funding for our early years children.

Pupil Premium Spending
We spend our money wisely, ensuring that our most vulnerable pupils enjoy and access the rich and broad curriculum we offer. Our governors and the head teacher work closely together to ensure that we use our funding to offer opportunities and experiences to support these children.
Pupil Premium is used in a number of ways; to finance interventions, to purchase resources, and to provide enrichment. The school spends money on quality interventions, delivered by highly skilled members of staff. These interventions take place both in and out of the classroom, and occur both during and at the end of the school day. Pupil premium money is also spent on the resources needed to deliver interventions to the highest quality. Enrichment activities, such as Young Enterprise day, music tuition, Forest Schools and subsidies for school trips and Year 6 residential all aim to improve pupil enjoyment and have an impact on the quality of reading, writing and maths. Our Pupil Premium spending is monitored termly, to assess whether the interventions and resources are having an impact on the children. We monitor whether each intervention is making a difference and alter our spending to ensure positive outcomes.
Great academic success depends on great attendance. We want to make sure that all our children attend school every day and on time. We have extra adults on our doors to meet and greet our children with friendly smiles so that children make a positive start to their learning and really enjoy arriving at school. We offer support and signposting to families who may be struggling to meet our high attendance targets.
What do we do now?
Following our very thorough Pupil Premium Review we have changed the way in which we plan for and monitor the spending of our Pupil Premium money and the progress this group makes.
This year we have:
- a dedicated member of the SLT to oversee Pupil Premium
- appointed a governor to act as Link Pupil Premium Governor.
- invested greatly in the use of interventions for all our vulnerable children.
- employed a Learning Mentor to focus on the learning behaviour and engagement of parents of our most vulnerable children.
- invested in Early Intervention, with an additional member of staff in Lower Foundation and a dedicated member of staff in Upper Foundation employed to focus on the early reading, writing and maths skills of our Pupil Premium children.
- a greater accountability on teaching staff to be responsible for all the children in their class, with aspirational targets set for Pupil Premium children to enable them to catch up.
- a much greater focus on the right of each child in school to receive Quality First Teaching from entry and in every class they move to in order for the gap to narrow as early on as possible.
