Welcome to our Year 1 webpage!
Diary Dates - 2nd May Inset Day, 6th May Bank Holiday,
Our topic this half term is 'The Magic Garden'. As part of this topic, we will be learning about different types of plants and trees. We will also plant our own beanstalks!
Take a look at the pictures of our new areas!
Welcome to Year 1! The teachers in Year 1 are Miss Kamal, Mrs Alvey and Mrs Wynne. We are lucky to have Mrs Clarke, Mrs MacDonald and Mrs Redmond working alongside us in Year 1.
The Year 1 team in character for World Book Day! Can you guess who we are?
In Year 1 we have PE twice a week on Wednesday and Thursday. Please can you ensure that your child has both indoor and outdoor kit which is clearly labelled. Your child should bring this into school on a Monday morning, leaving it in school all week and taking it home on a Friday.
Book bags also need to be brought into school every day. Your child will be provided with a reading record book which we ask you to fill in every time you read with your child. Should we need to make a comment about your child’s reading, we will do so in this book. There will be opportunities for your child to change their reading books on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
We have a spelling test every Monday and this will be linked to our phonics sessions. The following week's spellings will be included on the Year 1 weekly newsletter attached to this page. Please continue to practise your child’s spellings with them.
Both classrooms have exciting reading areas where children can read quietly and re-tell stories using the puppets. In addition to this, there are writing areas to explore and consolidate a range of writing genres.
Year 1 is the first year in Key Stage 1 and the children are learning to work more independently. The classroom environment is set up in a similar way to Upper Foundation Stage, allowing access to continuous provision for learning.
We have different areas of learning including a maths area, science/investigation area, small world and role-play. There is also a designated sand, water and design and make area.
In Spring 2, our topic was Toy Story. As part, of this topic the children had a very exciting visit from Wakefield Museum and had the opportunity to explore toys from the past.
As part of our Spring 1 topic 'Polar Adventures' we learnt about arctic animals and their habitat. We visited Leeds City Museum to gain first hand experience of different animals in the 'Life on Earth' exhibition. The children participated in the 'Snow Animals' workshop where they went on a fact finding trail and made polar bear masks. What an exciting day!
